Design governance is the discipline of protecting an approved design through construction. It means reviewing every submittal, shop drawing, substitution, and value-engineering proposal against the design the owner signed off — so the building delivered is the building approved, not a quietly degraded version of it.
Nobody kills a design deliberately; it dies by a thousand approvals. At tender, value-engineering swaps materials for "equivalents" that save 4% and cost the asset its character. During construction, shop drawings redraw details for buildability and lose the geometry that made them work. On site, the specified stone becomes "or similar" — and similar never is. Each change is small and defensible. Together they are why finished buildings disappoint the people who commissioned them, and why hotel assets fail brand audits weeks before opening.

Usually not alone. The design firm has a natural interest in defending its own work and is often demobilised after tender. Governance works best owner-side, run by people with design credentials but no stake in the drawings under review.
